A GEORGE IV BROWN OAK SIDE CABINET BY GILLOWS OF LANCASTER
The present cabinet was commissioned by Ferguson & Co. for John Sheepshank, the original drawings and costings survive in the Westminster Archives and record the Gillows cabinet maker as B. Sharples.
Bartholomew Sharples is listed as working for Gillows from 1835 -1850 in Gillows of Lancaster and London, Susan E. Stuart, Antique Collectors Club, 2008, Vol.II, p.279.
The cabinet with a rectangular top above two doors with deeply moulded pilasters
to either side, headed by flower head panels, the doors with the original gilt-brass grilles, raised on an inverted-breakfront plinth base and gadrooned bun feet.
The interior particularly well fitted with four graduated, solid oak lined drawers to one side, each drawer with partitions to the interior and with recessed gilt-brass handles, and two adjustable shelves to the other side.
The brown oak of excellent mellow colour.
